My name is Michael and I got the strange idea to transform our auld lady 'Celia' into an adventure mobil, to ”boldly go where no man has gone before”...
One of my biggest hobbies is photography (wildlife and landscape / seascape) and this often means to go to places that often are off the beaten track. I also like off-road and dirt tracks so it would be just helpful to have a capable AWD vehicle. The auld lady has AWD but not the ground clearance, so I got the idea of changing that...
I am a German in his 50's and live in Scotland for more than three years now. I love the country and what it offers to me. I love the people and my life here. My hobbies are photography, the Tank, science, off-road, hiking, cycling and some more...
Our old lady is called Celia and is a 2004 Volvo XC70 2.4 D5 AWD SE Geartronic. She has 182k miles on the clock and performs still pretty well. For her age she is a a good shape and condition.
In this section I would like to show up all the steps and works I will do to transfrom the auld lady into the adventure mobil. I will keep this section like a diary and will keep it updated all the times I change something on the tank.
If you are interested in what I am doing and in Volvo related stories, especially about Volvo XC models you can follow me on Instagram, YouTube and Facebook. The main channels will be Instagram and YouTube. You can find the links in the footer of the homepage.
The Volvo XC70, an all-purpose Volvo. The Volvo XC70 was developed in parallel with the second-generation Volvo V70 and was launched in autumn 2000, badged as the Volvo V70 XC. It was not Volvo’s first Cross Country model, but it did give the XC concept a stronger profile than before. The Volvo XC70 is a robust and flexible car designed for enhanced freedom of movement and demanding conditions. The Volvo XC70 features electronically controlled All-Wheel Drive. It has the ability to make its way on very poor roads, even when towing a horse-box or boat trailer.
Volvo launched 1997 the Volvo V70 XC Cross Country AWD based on their regular V70 Estate. The car was designed to go further. All Volvo V70 XC and the following XC70 models are bar none estates to give the customer the experience of having a huge space for their loads but still can enjoy to leave the roads...

When 1996 was coming to an end, a new Volvo model range was introduced: the Volvo S70, V70 and V70 XC.
The Volvo 70-series was developed from the successful 850 models, which had been on the market since 1991.
The exterior of the new S70 sedan and V70 estate showed softer styling than its predecessor, but still carried a strong Volvo identity. Inside the car, the dashboard was new as was most of the interior. In the area of safety a number of improvements were made.
The V70 XC was a rugged AWD version with an off-road capability bigger than its looks. It created the XC segment that turned out to be a huge success for Volvo.
A performance version, the S70/V70 R, boasting 250 hp and 0-100 km/h in 6,7 seconds came in 1997 in an extraordinary colour: saffron.
This first generation Volvo 70-series was produced until 2000, when the S70 model name was discontinued and replaced by the S60.

The second generation of the V70 arrived in 2000 with a somewhat softer design and based on the same technical architecture as the S80 from 1998.
The Cross Country version, V70 XC changed name to XC70 in 2002 in order to get harmonized with the new Volvo SUV, XC90.
V70 R came as model year 2003 and was a high performance version: a 2.5 litre engine with 300 hp connected with an AWD system and an active chassis, Four-C.

The third generation of the V70 and XC70 was launched at the motor show in Geneva, 2007. They were based upon the same technical architecture as the S80 sedan, launched one year earlier.
The compact V80 from the S80 never found its way into the estates, instead it was a 3-litre, 285 hp, inline turbo six that became the top petrol engine.
The V70 and XC70 was discontinued in April 2016 and succeeded by the V90 and V90 Cross Country.

What do we want to archive? We want to transfrom a standard Volvo XC70 into an adventure mobil, a beast to go where boldly no man has gone before...
Ok, maybe not that dramatic because even after transformation I dare to say every Land Rover will still go further than any Volvo XC70. But yes, what does it need to transform a standard Volvo XC70 into the Volvo XC AT? We would need to 'pimp' it a wee bit. So we do a concept catalog. We have to deliver to three departments.
The accessories, like light bars around the car, traffic advisor (rearside) and other external accessories should be easy accessible from inside the cabin. Also mechanical accessories should be easy accessible and reachable. Handling of the car and gear must be easy to access and functionally.
This is the workshop area. Here I will show you the transformation of our auld lady into an Adventure Mobil. I would like to ask you guys to help me finding a name for it, sadly the XC70 A(ll)T(errain) doesn't work since this is already the name of the Volvo conecpt car.
I will publish here step-by-step instructions for you guys, so that all interested fellows can do it themselves. I also will publish here links to my YouTube channel where I will upload video tutorials about the jobs I have done on the bus. I will also try to find people to get in touch with and share our experiences on here. I know it sounds strange but I will also oublish my failures, failures define us and our work, so showing you guys my mistakes might prevent you to do them.
I will also post on the blog attached to this homepage. There I will post the jobs in chronological order. On here I won't post every step since this would blow up the content of the page here. On here I will post mostly only very important and spectacular jobs that are unusual or even complete wierd for British standards.
I hope you guys don't mind but I will be me and only me, so please don't expect me to chat away in Oxford English here...

Hey guys, I got a set of Volvo XC 6-spoke rims with tyres. The tyres are in the size 215/65 R16 and so standard size for the XC70 (P2). Mine are 215/70 R16 and so a wee bit higher than the standard tyres. I will swop them so I get some more space between the arches and the wheels.

Hi guys, hope you don’t mind me to go on here, but today I changed the center console of our auld lady (2004 XC70 D5 AWD). I ripped out (gentle and careful) the pre-facelift center console and fitted in a facelift center console (2005 XC70).

Hi guys, I would like to annouce that I will exchange the center console of our auld lady into a facelift center console. The look of the facelift console (2005-2008) looks much nicer than the pre-facelift. I am thinking about making a video (How to do…)...

The next stage reached about the instrument cluster. I want to build my own digital instrument cluster like the new generation Volvo is using, like the new V90. I got a second instrument cluster and will fit in a 12.3" HD wide LED display. To do so I have too remove the old gauges and cut out the hole to fit in the display.

Got the bad idea to use U-Pol Raptor on my plastic panels and trim. The U-Pol Raptor is a protective paint which normally is used for the beds of pick-trucks in America. It has a structured surface and is UV protective and also water resistant. I am also thinking if using it as paint for the body, mixed with a RAL colour like beige, army green or desert. Would like to know your opinions about it.

Hello everyone, here I will introduce you to the wishlist. All items that are listed here shall somehow end up on the adventure bus or are built in already. Easy to understand that the unlinked ones are built in already, the ones that still have to come have a link attached to the manufacturer.
